Lisa’s Note of the Day: To See

Neurosculpting Note of the Day: Are you in unconscious blindness? David Eagleman, Neuroscientist, notes in “Incognito” that “to see something you must attend to it.” Here’s a neat experiment I do with my law enforcement workshops. I show a video of a basketball game. In it, a man in a gorilla suit walks onto the middle of the court and bangs his chest or does a dance, then leaves. The first time I show it I give instructions for the class to count how many times the team in white shirts passes the ball. By the end, few have seen the gorilla (about 15% see it). I then show the same video again, telling them that in this “similar” video something completely unexpected happens. About 85% see the gorilla. With one dangling carrot I cause selective blindness in a room full of hyper-vigilant “watchers”. How are your own expectations causing you to be blind to what’s in front of you? What can you do today to see more?
