Couch Potato Syndrome

When we’re doing “nothing” fMRIs show the brain is active in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex (MPFC), Dorsal Medial PFC, and Lateral Temporal lobe — these are the areas correlated to thinking about oneself, and analyzing others’ intentions and actions. Our mind wanders easily to these thoughts, and concerns of the past and future. Simple tasks, such as games, chores, hobbies, activities, etc., have a measurable impact on these areas. Blood flow is redirected and the brain begins to experience the alpha-waves akin to “being in the present moment”. Bottom line, there’s great detriment to being a couch-potato. What things will you do today to pull yourself out of worry and into the present?
