Social Cognitive neuroscience is consistently finding links between mental dispositions and physiological disease. It’s no surprise that recently scientists in Finland have explored the link between cynicism and dementia.
Cynical distrust, which is defined as the belief that others are mainly motivated by selfish concerns, has been associated with other health problems, such as heart disease. This is the first study to look at the relationship between cynicism and dementia.
“These results add to the evidence that people’s view on life and personality may have an impact on their health,” said study author Anna-Maija Tolppanen, PhD, of the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio. “Understanding how a personality trait like cynicism affects risk for dementia might provide us with important insights on how to reduce risks for dementia.”
With daily researching emerging regarding the connection between our beliefs and perceptions and our ultimate physical health it becomes imperative that we cultivate a mental practice targeted at clearing up our more negative perspectives. Yet we all know how difficult it is to trust others after we’ve been betrayed. Most of us understand how hard it is to feel positive when the world around us keeps throwing insurmountable obstacles in our way. Clearing up the mistrust, cynicism, and fear doesn’t really happen by wishing. It takes commitment and as much daily attention to creating new positive stories as we’ve allocated to creating the negative ones in the first place. And unless we’ve grown up with amazing role models, this is not necessarily an intuitive or easy process.
